The PokerListings WSOP 3-Bet is a suspicious email, a weak password and boom … unlimited access to all of afternoon poker news’ inner secrets.
Got a tip for a future 3-Bet? Let us know about it in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find a drastic change in Doyle Brunson’s social media presence, Phil Hellmuth gets some serious White Magic props and the race for 2015 WSOP Player of the Year turns heads.
1) Doyle Brunson Gets Hacked
We noticed this yesterday when posting our Doyle Super Senior update but figured it was just a temporary blip on the online radar.
Turns out Doyle’s Twitter profile (and email, apparently) have actually been hacked. By whom and to what end, we’re not sure yet.
We assume it was to get access to Doyle’s contacts/inner circle and run some kind of scam, but successfully mimicking the Godfather’s distinctive Texan style … well, that’s kind of a stretch as Jeff Madsen shows here:

We’re fairly confident all will end well/quickly but in the interim there’s some joy to be had in the posts the impostor is making on Doyle’s behalf:

2) Hellmuth Gets Name-Dropped By NBA Finals MVP
For a guy who gets a lot of grief (and rightly so) for being an egregious celebrity name-dropper and self-aggrandizer, this must feel like some sweet, sweet justice:
Thanks @elena-dangelodre (MVP of the NBA Finals) for this mention on @JimmyKimmelLive last night: https://t.co/FpAgX5WdVH @Warriors #POSITIVITY— phil_hellmuth (@phil_hellmuth) June 23, 2015
White Magic given its due by the NBA Finals MVP on Jimmy Kimmel to millions of viewers nationwide? You can’t buy that kind of ego-sating satisfaction, we imagine.
Still, of course, it was Phil who Tweeted it out asap.
3) Volpe Still Leads 2015 WSOP POY Race; Would Lead 2014 Too
Since the second the WSOP announced it had partnered with the GPI to power its Player of the Year Award, poker players have spent a portion of their waking hours critiquing the idea on Twitter.
The main complaint? The rating algorithm mis-values high buy-ins and big field sizes leading to an unfair division of points to winners in certain events.
In other words: you can win a couple of bracelets and not even be close to winning the POY award.
As many suspected that’s the exact scenario playing out in the current POY race as the leader – Paul Volpe – has yet to win a tournament (although he does have two 2nds) while the two guys with two bracelets – Brian Hastings and Max Pescatori – sit 5th and 4th respectively.
There’s still a lot of time for this to all play out (including 10 “bonus” events at WSOP Europe in Berlin this Fall), but that hasn’t stopped the naysayers from calling the POY formula everything from a bad fit to an “absolute joke.”
Only catch? Even if the WSOP was using last year’s system Volpe would still be leading the race right now anyway! So take that, haters.
We, of course, have faith the system will work in the end and the “best” player from the summer/fall will take the crown. And if not?
Well, that’s what makes poker great. No matter who stakes a claim to the title there’s always someone with a convincing argument that says otherwise. It’s really the Spirit of Poker that matters, isn’t it?
