WPT World Championship – Prestige Time!

WPT World Championship – Prestige Time!

A total of 821 players returned today for Day 2 of the WPT World Championship, 299 of them would make it to the money spots. The day would be kicked off at noon and the remaining players buckled up for six levels of 90 minutes each.

The WPT World Championship would not come close to the 3,835 entries of last year. This year the WPT World Championship has to do it with 2,392 entries, taking into consideration that there was no guaranteed prize pool this year, they have outdone themselves once again. The brand WPT stands for excellence in every meaning of the word, and that is one of the main reasons why the Wynn/Encore Hotel is hosting this majestic event.

Day 2 of this event would combine all remaining players of the opening flights a, b, and c, making sure that dozens of well-known pros would be battling it out to get into the money spots. WPT ambassadors such as Brad Owen, Ethan ‘Rampage’ Yau, Jon ‘Apestyles’ van Fleet, Vince Van Patten, and Lynn Gilmartin, all took place with healthy stacks. They were joined by top pros such as Paul Volpe, Igor Kurganov, David ODB Baker, Kasey ‘Pokermom’ Mills, Calvin Anderson, and Ryan Riess, as well as legends of the game David Williams, Erick Lindgren, Brian Yoon, and J.C Tran.

Bubble Play- Smooth Operator Scott Stewart

As we were nearing the money spots, we saw many big names tumble down. However, the WPT World Championship is that humongous, big names would make it through regardless. Just before the bubble burst, it went fast with eliminations. Matt Savage, Executive Tournament Director and well-praised for his excellent organisational work and decision-making, and his team announced that play would stop for the day when the bubble had been reached or the end of level 16 was reached. Just around 8.30 pm local time, the bubble did burst and it was Ernest Bush which was the unfortunate one to bust as the last player before the money was reached:

In a single-raised three-way pot to the 10 3 2 flop, Scott Stewart bets and then faces the all-in of Ernest Bush for 570,000 in the cutoff. It folds back to Stewart and he prepares calling chips while he is in the tank. The call was unavoidable and cards went open after the hands were finished at the other tables.

Ernest Bush: Q 10 .
Scott Stewart: Q Q .

Bush is in bad shape and failed to improve on the 3  turn as well as the 5  river to bust him out of the tournament as bubble boy. Stewart would end the day with approximately 2,8M in chips.

WPT World Championship – Day 3

The third day already kicked off and 291 players returned to the tables of the Encore Ballroom, all looking to survive another day in this prestigious WPT World Championship tournament. When I was doing my daily morning sightseeing tour across the Wynn/Encore Hotel, it was yet another day in paradise seeing all these big names in the poker world stumbling across the hallways towards the Encore Ballroom.

The media room is close to the room where poker history will be written as one of these players will be carved into history by having his- or her name on the illustrious Mike Sexton trophy. It’s a tough cookie realising that Mike Sexton, one of poker’s best-known personalities, is no longer among us but his legacy remains visible in every corner of the World Poker Tour. Not only was he a very successful poker player himself, but he is mostly known for his commentary alongside Vince Van Patten. Side-by-side they were often successful, but this time it was Van Patten who was aiming to get his first cash since 2015 at the World Poker Tour. It worked out well for him by reaching Day 3, but that’s where it ended as well in 265th place, good for $19,600.
