Who Will Be Left for Day 6 of the WPT World Championship?

he fifth day of the WPT World Championship started with just 16 players remaining, all looking for the incredible top prize of over $3,000,000. The atmosphere in poker tournaments which are deep, are always full of camaraderie. Players like Jonathan Willis and Fabian Gumz had brought a lot of fun and colour to the tournament over the previous days, leaving fans, and us, hoping for more exciting action on this penultimate day.

The eliminations came quickly early in the day. Andrea Dato, hailing from Italy, finished in 14th place. After Chris Moorman opened to 600,000, Dato moved all in with 9 9 , only to run into Anže Šmajd’s J J . The board didn’t offer Dato any help, and his pocket nines fell to Šmajd’s jacks, earning him $215,000 for his efforts.

Gumz wraps up 2024 with a bang—though not with a final table appearance

As mentioned earlier, Willis and Gumz had lots of fun at the tables, but also battled hard to put them in the top spots. Unfortunately, the day didn’t pan out as hoped for these two fine gentlemen. Fabian Gumz saw his tournament run come to an end in 12th place, earning $255,000. He shoved from the small blind with A K after Ryan raised to 800,000 from the cutoff. Ryan made the call with 10 10 , and the board ran out 10 4 K 8 8 , giving Ryan a winning full house and sending Gumz to the rail.

On the outer table, Brian Yoon met a dramatic end in 11th place. Holding queens and tens, Yoon found himself in a massive pot against Edward Pak, who had an ace-high flush draw. Pak completed his flush on the turn and sent Yoon packing for $255,000.

Lisberger cannot find a miracle

Joshua Lisberger, a recreational player from the U.S. who mainly plays online poker, finished in 10th place. Despite his limited live poker experience, Lisberger impressed everyone by navigating his way through a massive field of 2,392 entries. His journey ended when his pocket fives couldn’t outdraw Pak’s pocket sevens. Lisberger took home $310,000, a fantastic achievement for a player balancing poker with running a small family business. His mother also shared in the happiness as she had 10% of the action following a short conversation with Lisberger when he was on his way out.

Jonathan ‘Jontyw’ Willis out in 9th

Jonathan Willis fared slightly better, making it to the final table before bowing out in 9th place. In his final hand, Edward Pak raised from the button to 1,200,000, and Willis called from the big blind. The flop came 8 7 2 , and Willis check-raised all in for 10,900,000 after Pak’s continuation bet of 1,100,000. Pak, holding 10 4 , used a Time Chip before calling, while Willis turned over J 7 for a pair of sevens. The turn brought the K , giving Pak a flush, and the river J sealed Willis’s fate. He exited in 9th place with $310,000, a strong finish for the British player who tends to be travelling the world a lot when checking out his social media accounts.
