The Triton Poker Series London came to a glittering conclusion on August 10 after Phil Ivey and Jason Koon picked up the last two tournament titles.
Jason Koon was first onto the winner’s rostrum. The American pro has found a home on the Triton Poker Series, particularly in short deck events, which is why virtually no one was surprised when he picked up his ninth title in the discipline.
As we reported on Wednesday, Koon has already tasted victory at Triton London. He took down Event #6, a $63,600 No Limit Hold’em 7-Handed showdown, for $1.5 million. That win spurred him onto a 23rd place finish in the Luxon Invitational ($342,000 payout) and a fourth-place finish in Event #13 ($582,000 payout).
Jason Koon Uses His One Time to Make it Nine
However, Koon saved one of his best performances of the series until last. Despite the total number of entries being just 46, winning was far from easy in a $63,000 tournament filled with short deck specialists. In fact, Koon needed to hit a one-outer on the river to stay alive during Thursday night’s finale.
But, like a true pro, he didn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Speaking after his win, Koon said he’d already “accepted his fate” in the hand against Tan Xuan. Both players had sets, Xuan a set of kings and Koon a set of nines. It was virtually curtains for Koon with all his chips in the middle. Fortunately for Koon, a nine on the river catapulted him back into contention.
Event #16: $60,000 Short Deck Main Event Result
- Jason Koon – $828,000
- Kiat Lee – $598,000
- Lun Loon – $386,800
- Tan Xuan – $292,500
- Chris Brewer – $226,300
- Wai Kin Yong – $176,700
- Masashi Oya – $140,700
- Daniel Dvoress – $111,000
That pot swung the match with four players left and, within a short space of time, Koon had dispatched with Xuan, Lun Loon and, finally, Wai Kiat Lee. With that, the Triton ambassador picked up his second win of the series and $828,000. More impressively, Jason Koon now has nine wins on the Triton Poker Series, five more than his closest rival, Mikita Badziakouski.
Phil Ivey Reaffirms His GOAT Status with Second Triton Title
Someone else who picked up two titles in London was none other than Phil Ivey. The GOAT banked his 11th $1 million live win by taking down Event #12 (a $62,400 NLH turbo) early in the series. That win was preceded by two near misses in events #3 and #6, putting Ivey’s series winnings at $1.8 million.
Clearly not wanting to end his trip on anything less than a round number, Phil Ivey dug deep in the $26,500 short deck ante only event. With 17 of the world’s best to contend with, Ivey had to mix it up. He switched from aggressive to passive seamlessly during the August 10 showdown. Eventually, he won a three-way all-in and never looked back.
Event #17: $25,000 Short Deck Ante Only Turbo Result
- Phil Ivey – $280,500
- Danny Tang – $193,800
- Stephen Chidwick – $123,800
- Daniel Dvoress – $94,900
- Thai Ha – $74,200
- Anson Ewe – $57,800
Despite pressure from Stephen Chidwick, Daniel Dvoress, and Danny Tang, Ivey remained steadfast once he’d secured the chip lead. He closed the show, and the Triton Poker Series London, by beating Tang heads. His second win of the series means Ivey will fly back to America with more than $2 million in prize money and, once again, the poker community’s unwavering admiration.
