Today we had one poker tournament on the schedule and two satellite tournaments. The tournament was the PokerListings Deepstack tournament with a buy-in of €225 and a guaranteed prize pool of €20.000. The satellite tournaments were respectively for The Festival Series Bratislava later this year and for the Coolbet Open Main Event. It was to be expected that overlay might play a big role today, which eventually happened but by a small margin. The PokerListings Deepstack had plenty of runners today, which is a good sign for the Main Event starting tomorrow with its first flights, starting as of 12:00 CET and 21:00 CET. Besides all the poker, the weather was extremely good in Bratislava, and the atmosphere at the Banco Casino was ecstatic. The Coolbet Lounge opened up its door as well, for some casual games of Backgammon and lots of fun.
PokerListings Deepstack
The main attraction of today’s schedule was the PokerListings Deepstack. Many players decided to play the only real tournament on the schedule today, above the satellite events. Head of Poker Mauritz Altikardes was also in the mix, and the player who would bust him out of the tournament would receive a historical ‘Make Poker Great Again’ cap. Thankfully for the person who busted him, it was still early on the day, so he could protect himself better against the great sunshine outside. Known names as Christian Arstad, Jonathan and Oskar Wedde, Leif Iversen, Anne Bezdek, Sturla Hiller, Aneta Kalikova, and Jason Kiselis, all turned up to play some poker today, but unfortunately for all of them besides Christian, it was Game-Over before the money was reached.
The money would be reached after 7 hours of play, mainly due to the Deepstack structure of course, the 25-minute blind levels, and the 12-level late registration period. It took some time still when the bubble had to burst, as several players just thought a bit longer than usual. That the shorter stacks found a double-up several times, didn’t speed up the game either. But when the bubble had burst, it was Norwegian Christian Arstad and Polish Dominik Ostrowski, who had the commanding chip lead in their hands. With 17 players left, it went pretty fast downhill for several players such as Magnus Christensen, Kjell Sterner, and Taavi Vaelisson.
When the final nine were reached, it was eventually Philipp Sander who went out directly as 9th. He couldn’t secure a double-up of his short stack. Soon followed by the Fin Hakala and Austrian Rapf. After this, there were two commanding chip leaders in the names of Ralbowski and Singh, who both had roughly 25% of the chips each.
Alexis Kivu, Christian Arstad, and Oskar Hastad, all had around ten big blinds and had to hope for a quick double-up. But action dropped a bit, as nobody seemed to risk their chips. Until Alexis Kivu found a double-up with his Ace-King against the Ace-Jack of Peter Ralbovski, leaving the Slovak in a tough spot with just shy over ten Big Blinds. It did not take long before he also lost those chips, finishing in 6th place.
It was time for some Norwegian action with Christian Arstad who was involved in a huge pot with five people remaining. Ostrowski from Poland called with a weaker Ace on an Ace-high board and didn’t improve against the Ace-Jack of Arstad, catapulting Arstad straight into the chip lead and half of the chips in play. The Pole was left with a couple of chips. But it was not the Pole who would get a hit next..
The two leaders of the game, Christian Arstad and Deep Sigh found a massive all-in situation, where Singh took it down with his Queens against the Ace-King of Arstad. Now Arstad was left bleeding, and Singh with an extraordinary lead over the rest of the field. Arstad then went all-in straight from the spot with pocket 3s, which couldn’t win off the 8’s from Hastad. Turned out to be that Sweden didn’t forget about the previous battle of the Scandinavians. Arstad finished in terrible fashion in 5th place.
One we almost forgot about, the Pole Ostrowski, gathered chips here and there before winning an all-in with Queen-Nine off, against the Ace-Eight suited from Harstad.
Then Deep Singh found it time to put use to his commanding chip lead and pushed around to the short stacks. Eventually winning with 6-7 off suit, against pocket 8’s of Harstad, and the 4-9 off suit from Alexis Kivu. A double elimination and we have a heads-up match!
The Heads-Up match for the great top prize and the trophy wouldn’t take much time this time around. Deep Singh was already dominating the end phase of the tournament and continued to do so during the last battle, even though he had lost some ground in the beginning of the match.
Congratulations to Deep Singh from Austria! You are our next PokerListings Deepstack Champion here at the Coolbet Open!
