And just like that it’s time for poker summer camp again.

The 46th annual World Series of Poker is officially underway. With two events getting the seven-week long journey started from the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

  • Event #1, the traditional kickoff $565 Casino Employees Event, drew a healthy 688 entrants and cut the field down to less than 10% heading into Day 2 tomorrow.
  • Event #2, $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em, brought out most of poker’s best and brightest hoping to get the summer started off in the proper column of the ledger.

Among the 422 entrants were, of course, the king of the WSOP Phil Hellmuth. Plus, former champs Greg Merson, Ryan Riess and Martin Jacobson and a litany of top-flight pros you’d rather not have a seat next to. With Day 1 now wrapped they’ve sliced off a good portion of the field in the running for the $466k first-place prize and the all-important gold bracelet and will be back tomorrow to go at it again.
