Early last week it appeared that Gus Hansen had finally turned a corner with his online game but he’s right back where he started after losing a whopping $1.2 million in the latter stages of the week.
It was a whirlwind seven days for Hansen, who actually made about $1.25 million before losing it all back.
Hac “trex313” Dang also had a very rough week losing nearly $1 million.
On the other hand Patrik Antonius and Alexander Kostritsyn put together solid weeks with hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit.
Gus Hansen Wins and Loses $1.2 Million
Gus Hansen just turned 40. Unfortunately, he hasn’t become any wiser. The Great Dane has been trying incredibly hard to reverse his online fortune but he simply can’t seem to get anything going.
Last week, Hansen played an astounding 12,000 hands, an amount which is usually only reached by players like Viktor Blom or Phil Ivey.
After two successful sessions on Sunday and Monday, Hansen had pocketed a profit of $1.25 million dollars.
He was playing mostly mixed games and 8-Game, and almost everybody who challenged Hansen had to pay for it. Mixed games were the most busy tables last week, which of course might have to do with Hansen’s presence.
But, luck is a short-term pleasure for the Danish player, and so the money ran through his fingers like sand. By the end of the week, he had slipped into a slight minus, so he remains the biggest online high-stakes loser of 2014.
Kostritsyn Crushes the Mixed Games
One of the leaders of the current high stakes trend – mixed games and 8-Game – is Alexander Kostritsyn.
The 26-year old player from Moscow has been focusing on mixed games for three years, and it is really paying off.
The top dog delivered a dominant performance last week. He booked another $650k and climbed to the second spot behind Daniel Cates in the yearly leaderboard.
Hac Dang, on the other hand, went the opposite direction. The PLO specialist usually practices great table selection and it’s rare for anyone to squeeze much profit out of him.
Last week, however, things went terrible for the 27-year old. On Friday alone, he lost nearly a million dollars.
Biggest Pot of the Week
The biggest – tracked – hand of the week played out in Pot Limit Omaha – for the first time in a long time.
It was not a PLO table, though, but an 8-Game session, and the blinds were $300/$600.
The players at the table all played major parts in what was going on at the nosebleed tables last week: Hac trex313 Dang (SB), Alexander PostFlopAction Kostritsyn (BB), Mikael punting-peddler Thuritz, Alexandre Alexonmoon Luneau, Phil Polarizing Ivey, and Gus Hansen.
At first it seemed as if nobody wanted to play the hand. Three players folded, and then Hansen raised to a meager $1200.
Hac Dang in the Small Blind wasn’t willing to come along, but Kostritsyn in the Big made it $4k to go. Hansen complied, and they went heads-up to the flop.
The first three cards on the board were
Kostritsyn lead out with $6k, Hansen raised to $26k, and seconds later, the pot was filled with $106k, and no more bets were possible.
Turn and river would be dealt twice, and these were the hands at showdown:
Gus Hansen:
Alexander Kostritsyn:
Top set and straight outs for the Russian, top two pair and an open ender for the Dane. The first draw
—
brought no change at all, whereas the second draw
—
brought the straight for both players, so the second half of the pot was split.
However, Alexander Kostritsyn won three quarters of this $220k pot, which was the largest of the week.
