Five and Counting: Andras Nemeth Wins Fifth EPT Title in Prague High Roller

Five and Counting: Andras Nemeth Wins Fifth EPT Title in Prague High Roller

If there’s one name that keeps popping up on the European Poker Tour (EPT), it’s Andras Nemeth. The Hungarian poker legend has achieved what few can dream of — securing his fifth EPT title, a feat that places him firmly among the tour’s elite. Nemeth claimed victory in the €10,200 Mystery Bounty event at EPT Prague 2024, walking away with €132,980 in total winnings.

Nemeth’s victory was no stroll in the park. The 42-entry field was packed with top-tier talent, but the Hungarian maestro’s precision, calculated risks, and a pivotal ace-high hero call at the final table propelled him to glory. With nearly $7.7 million in lifetime tournament earnings, Nemeth has once again reminded the poker world why he’s a force to be reckoned with.

Nemeth’s Road to the Final Table

The €10,200 Mystery Bounty event at EPT Prague kicked off with some of the biggest names in poker vying for a slice of the €406,980 prize pool. Nemeth started Day 2 as the chip leader, having meticulously built his stack on Day 1. Early on, the pace was brisk as notable players like Sonny Franco, Scott Margereson, and Steve O’Dwyer were eliminated before the bubble.

As bounties came into play at Level 13, the action heated up. Nikita Kuznetsov made headlines by busting Simone Andrian in a dramatic three-way all-in featuring three pocket pairs. Meanwhile, Nemeth solidified his position at the top of the chip counts by taking pots from players like Candido Cappiello, who left with a €10,000 bounty.

By the time the final table was set, only six players remained, each guaranteed a payout but with bounties still up for grabs. Nemeth entered the final table with one of the largest stacks, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

Final Table Action

The final table opened with Michail Manolakis holding a slight chip lead over Nemeth, followed by Kuznetsov in third. The first major elimination came when Niklas Astedt’s pocket aces crushed Elias Suhonen’s Big Slick to burst the bubble. Shortly after, Kuznetsov delivered a crushing blow to Maksim Vaskresenski, whose ace-jack fell to Kuznetsov’s ace-king.

Niklas Astedt, who had pulled the tournament’s largest bounty of €40,000 earlier, was the first to exit the final table. His A-7 couldn’t find a miracle against Morten Klein’s pocket sevens, sending the Swedish pro home with €53,800 in total earnings. Klein’s run ended shortly after when his ace-king fell to Nemeth’s ace-high in a critical preflop showdown, leaving just four players in contention.

Russian player Ilya Pavlov was next to depart, his stack dwindling as Kuznetsov turned up the aggression. Pavlov’s exit in fourth place set up a fierce three-handed battle between Nemeth, Kuznetsov, and Manolakis. A pivotal moment came when Nemeth made a stunning hero call with ace-high to catch Manolakis bluffing with queen-high, propelling him into the chip lead.

Kuznetsov was eliminated in third place after his jack-ten failed to outflop Nemeth’s ace-high. This left Nemeth and Manolakis to duel for the title. While Manolakis gained an early advantage in heads-up play, Nemeth clawed back with a crucial double-up before picking off another bluff to reclaim the lead. The final hand saw Nemeth’s ace-high best Manolakis’ flopped second pair, crowning him the champion.

Speaking about his latest win, Nemeth noted: “When you have a chip lead, it’s easy to feel close to victory, but the key is to stay focused and take each hand as it comes. That mindset has always been my strength.”
