Dutch Double Domination Thanks to Two-Outer at the $100k Triton Highroller

The start of the extravagantly expensive tournament season is in Cyprus this year. The Triton Poker Tour is taking place there these days, which attracts only the crème de la crème of the international high roller scene with buy-ins between 50,000 and 125,000 dollars.

On Sunday and Monday, the $100,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament was played and Dutchman Teun Mulder won ahead of his compatriot Tom Vogelsang.

The prestigious and pricey high roller event attracted numerous well-known players on the first day of play. Among others, the German high stakes specialist Christoph Vogelsang, the double bracelet winner Nick Petrangelo, high stakes veteran Cary Katz, Player of the Year 2021 Ali Imsirovic, cash game legend Daniel Cates and the Belarusian online pro Mikita Badziakouski dropped by.

After the first day of play, Australian Michael Addamo was in the lead. Right behind him were the two Dutchmen Tom Vogelsang and Teun Mulder.

Phil Ivey Comes and Goes

The second day of play began with numerous new and re-entries. Among others, Phil Ivey tried to get in on the action. However, the poker superstar only lasted two levels, then he was eliminated and could not re-enter.

With the blinds rising rather quickly, players were sent to the rail in rapid succession and in the not-so-late hours of the evening, the bubble was on. Nine players were paid out and the last player to miss the prize money was Hungarian Andras Nemeth. The remaining players had reached the final table and were guaranteed $192,000 in prize money.

Final Table

The eventual winner Teun Mulder was at the bottom of the chip count at the start of the final table and needed to win a flip with 77 against KQ against Mike Watson to stay alive. His compatriot Tom Vogelsang was also in touching distance to the rail at one point with less than 10 big blinds before doubling up with A K > A 4 preflop against Ali Imsirovic, eliminating the 2021 Player of the Year in the process.

After that, there was no stopping Vogelsang. He eliminated Paul Phua (a little lucky preflop with JT > TT) and Michael Soyza with QJ > TT in 7th and 6th place.

This was followed by a great performance by Jake Schindler, who single-handedly eliminated the two Canadians Daniel Dvoress and Mike Watson in swift succession. By that time the blinds were so high that almost all the action took place preflop, with raises and folds dominating the action.

Lucky lead for Teun Mulder

Jake Schindler‘s run was halted abruptly when he was all-in preflop with J J against Teun Mulder, who only had 4 4 and only had two outs. The flop and turn fell K 6 3 and 8 , but the river brought the 4 and Mulder was able to snatch a huge pot and was suddenly in the lead while Schindler was left with only three and a half big blinds.

Schindler managed to double once against Vogelsang, but was eliminated a little while later with A 3 preflop all-in against Teun Mulder’s Q J . The flop gave Schindler two pair with A 9 3 , but the turn and river fell 6 and 10 and the American was rivered by Teun Mulder for the second time at this final table.

Straight Over Straight Abruptly Ends the Heads-Up

The heads-up between Mulder and Vogelsang lasted exactly two hands before the final confrontation. This one was actually not a preflop all-in:

With blinds of 100k / 200k, Tom Vogelsang limped in from the button with 10 6 and Teun Mulder checked with K 10 .

Flop: J 8 2 – Mulder check-called a 300k bet.

Turn: Q – Mulder check-called a 600k bet.

River: 9 – Mulder bet 600k, Vogelsang moved all in for 2,300k and Mulder called immediately.

With the better straight, Teun Mulder won the tournament and secured $1.94 million in prize money. Tom Vogelsang was left with $1.39 million in prize money as consolation.

After the tournament Mulder was happy about the heads-up against his compatriot and good friend Tom Vogelsang: “We talked about it before and said that the Dutch will be first and second today.” Their prediction came true. “I’m pretty tired, but I feel good,” Mulder said at the end of a marathon day. “I’ve been pretty lucky with the fours, but to play against my best friend is just amazing.”

Today, the $75k short-deck event is on the schedule in Cyprus. Then the most expensive tournament of the series, the $125k short-deck event, starts tomorrow.
