David Docherty Wins the Irish Poker Open 2023 for €365K

It’s every poker player’s dream to win big, and for Scottish pro, David Docherty, this finally became a reality in late 2021 with a Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) win that earned him £138K. For many that would be enough, with a life-changing sum of money often being a catalyst for an actual life change. For Docherty, however, it was more a new plateau, and the natural culmination his peers would agree was a deserved inevitability. 2022 saw him add another 6-figure result when pocketing £103K for making the final table at the European Poker Tour (EPT) London leg.

Roll on to the Irish Poker Open 2023 Main Event, which attracted a total of 2,491 entries and generated a €2.4 million prize pool – the biggest tournament in Irish poker history!

Once the dust had settled at the end of a gruelling festival jointly sponsored by PokerStars and Paddy Power, Docherty was the last man standing, continuing his quest by adding a career-best €365K to his impressive list of accolades. “I’ve put half of my life into the game and it’s only been the past couple of years that I’ve started to get huge results… Now I feel like they’re coming one after the other.” Budding champions note that his journey to Dublin started with a €109 online satellite, so this is yet another example of how real money online poker gives players the opportunity to parlay an online poker tournament qualifier into a prestigious Live Poker Tournament victory and, with it, a major payday.

  4. Tom Waters (UK) – €124,500
  5. Andy Black (Ireland) – €95,500

  7. Carl Shaw (UK) – €56,500
  8. Henri Ojala (Finland) – €43,500

Some might recognise the presence of the legendary Andy Black at the final table. The €95,500 for an excellent high finish left the Irish poker star just a few thousand euros short of overtaking Max Silver at the top of Ireland’s all-time money list.

Ireland’s Declan Rice, the long-time final table chip-leader, might well consider himself unlucky after coming within a whisker of wrapping up the title, but in the cold light of day can be pleased with a cool €228,700, given that he was virtually down to the felt at one stage.
