Today in the 3-Bet we find Phil Galfond chipping his two cents in on a Daniel Negreanu hand, spend 210 minutes with Jennifer Tilly and revisit the highs and lows of Amarillo Slim.

1) Galfond Pipes in on Negreanu Hand

With the 2+2 forums still down, the only free-for-all poker analysis going these days seems to be over at Daniel Negreanu’s Full Contact Poker forum.

After Daniel’s much publicized 2+2 banning last month, he’s been answering FAQs and posting some strategy scenarios at FCP a bit more anyway, but his fans got a real treat with his latest post.

Negreanu posted a hand he played with Isaac Haxton from the $25k High Roller at EPT Monte Carlo and let the punters offer their thoughts. To much surprise, high-stakes icon Phil Galfond popped in a few entries down with a detailed analysis.

Among Galfond’s insight:

“Assuming this is 9 handed, there’s 6500 in the pot before calling his raise. You’re a little bit deeper than I generally like to shove (though I think many of these hot-shot young kid tourney pros would disagree), but I think this is a good spot for it.

“Ike will be opening very very wide here, especially if he perceives the button and sb as weaker/tighter players. Did he? He’d open less frequently if there were a tough player on the button or in the sb with between 15 and 25k. Was there? His stack matters too, but not as much for how often he opens.”

As we’ve said before, whenever a poker genius like Galfond offers up his two cents, even if it’s at a level where some serious metagame is at play, it’s always worth a read.

Negreanu, for his part, also happens to be doing fine in the $25k as he sits second with 11 players left as we speak.

2) Jennifer Tilly Explains Poker Vortex, Bride of Chucky

Jennifer Tilly’s new role in the Broadway play Don’t Dress for Dinner has brought out a new wave of media coverage for her and she’s not shying away from talking about her poker life.

Following up on her recent NY Post interview, Tilly spent 210 minutes with a New York Magazine writer and the time was heavily flavored with Tilly’s poker life.

Tilly took the reporter to a high-stakes house game in Tribeca, introduced her to her boyfriend Phil Laak, let the reporter sit in on her session and revisited her $100k bink at the tables in Las Vegas.

Explaining her recent choice of poker over acting, Tilly put it this way:

“It’s like drugs,” she says. “You start off playing 25, 50 cents at the kitchen table, and then you play one dollar, two dollars, but you just want more and more thrills. That’s why I think it’s a great thing that I’m taking some time off and doing a play.

“I love theater, and I love acting. I just kind of forgot about it for, like, eight years. I was just in this crazy sort of vortex where I thought that poker was the most important thing in the world.

“Any time I would get a part, I would say, ‘Well, would I rather do this or would I rather be playing poker?’ And the answer was, ‘I’d rather be playing poker.’ ”

She also explains how being in Bride of Chucky gets her props at Popeye’s.

3) Amarillo Slim: Hustled Willie Nelson out of $300k in Dominoes

One of the greatest gamblers to ever live. One of the most famous poker players ever. A chameleon. Whatever you want him to be. A great hustler.

In his words, he was “delighted by human misery.” To Doyle Brunson, he was a man with more gall than anyone he’s ever known.

In the end, all of it and more is probably true about Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston Jr., who passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 83.
