Ali Imsirovic is Poker Player of the Year 2021 (GPI and PokerGO Ranking)

Ali Imsirovic is Poker Player of the Year 2021 (GPI and PokerGO Ranking)

It was really no surprise anymore when PokerGO announced that Ali Imsirovic was Poker Player of the Year 2021, because rarely has a player dominated a year at the poker tables as much as Ali Imsirovic did in 2021. The US-based poker pro from Bosnia won a total of 14 tournaments this year, including numerous high-stakes tournaments on the newly launched PokerGO Tour.

Both the Global Poker Index (GPI) and the PokerGO Leaderboard show Imsirovic as the objectively best player of the year. Imsirovic first made a name of himself in 2018 when he won several highroller tournaments and was named Breakout Player of the Year by the Global Poker Index.

Since then, Ali Imsirovic has been a frequent guest at numerous highroller tournaments and has been able to confirm his early successes several times. The year 2021 was then to become his best year so far.

Imsirovic managed to win a staggering 7 Aria Highroller tournaments in the PokerGO tournament series. In addition, he won the Super Highroller Bowl Europe, the US Poker Open and the Venetian Highroller.

Imsirovic dominates GPI and PokerGO leaderboard

It is only logical that Ali Imsirovic, after such a successful year, tops the annual leaderboards of both the Global Poker Index and PokerGO.

With 3,479 and 4,364 points respectively, Imsirovic is clearly in first place in both rankings.

However, the GPI and PokerGO do not agree on the following players. The Global Poker Index, which takes into account all tournaments of the current year, sees Chance Kornuth and Shannon Shorr in second and third place. The PokerGO leaderboard, which only takes into account tournaments with a buy-in of over $10k, sees Michael Addamo and Sean Perry next to Imsirovic on the podium.

How the PokerGO Leaderboard system works

PokerGO Logo

The PokerGO Tour takes into account the top-ranked players from tournaments with a buy-in of $10,000 or more. This includes many results from PokerGO televised events such as the Poker Masters, the U.S. Poker Open and the Super High Roller Bowl.

Depending on the buy-in and prize money, there are between 10 and 1,500 points for each result, whereby the particularly expensive ultra-high rollers with six-figure buy-ins are only weighted at just under 50%. The exact rules can be read here: PokerGO Points System.

How the points system of the Global Poker Index works

GPI Logo

The Global Poker Index (GPI for short) takes into account all tournaments listed in the Hendon Mob with a buy-in of one dollar or more and at least 32 players. In the calculation, the buy-ins are capped at 20,000 euros so that ultra-highroller tournaments do not distort the result too much.
