A Weekend to Remember at EPT Prague 2024

A Weekend to Remember at EPT Prague 2024

As EPT Prague 2024 rolled into the weekend, the tables at the Hilton Prague were anything but quiet. Players ranging from up-and-coming talents to poker legends converged in the Czech capital for three days of jaw-dropping plays, surprise eliminations, and career-defining wins.

From Thomas Santerne’s continued dominance to Espen Jorstad finally breaking through for his maiden EPT title, the action delivered in every sense of the word. Meanwhile, the Eureka Main Event and High Roller added their own blend of drama and anticipation as they unfolded. Here’s everything you need to know about what went down over this unforgettable weekend.

Thomas Santerne Strikes Again with €20,000 No-Limit Hold’em Title

The spotlight fell on Thomas Santerne as he added yet another accolade to his already meteoric career. In less than two years, Santerne has gone from an unheralded player with no recorded cashes to one of the brightest stars in French poker, boasting over $4 million in live earnings. At EPT Prague, Santerne overcame a field of 15 entries in the €20,000 No-Limit Hold’em event to claim €175,000, solidifying his reputation as a high-stakes crusher.

The final table started with players like Niklas Astedt and Morten Klein making early moves, but neither could hold on to their momentum. Klein, in particular, reentered multiple times after hitting a string of coolers, including running pocket kings into aces twice. However, he bounced back late, eliminating Steve O’Dwyer and Teun Mulder to position himself well for heads-up play.

The heads-up duel between Santerne and Klein was a rollercoaster. Santerne narrowly avoided elimination when a rivered queen saved him in a critical hand. He quickly turned the tables, landing a flush against Klein’s trip nines to seal the deal. The victory marks Santerne’s second EPT title of the year, following his Super High Roller win in Paris, and raises the question: how soon will he be hailed as one of the greats?

Espen Jorstad’s Long-Awaited EPT Title in the €25K Super High Roller Warm Up

Espen Jorstad entered EPT Prague with a WSOP Main Event bracelet under his belt but was yet to win a title on the European Poker Tour. That changed on Sunday, when he triumphed in the €25,000 Super High Roller Warm Up, besting a field of 34 elite players to take home €277,500 from an €807,500 prize pool.

The event saw its share of unusual moments, including Morten Klein’s creative negotiation for a €5,000 bubble prize to secure Norwegian league points. With a €1,000 deduction from each of the top five payouts, Klein walked away happy despite his seventh-place finish.

At the final table, Jorstad established himself as the dominant force. The Norwegian took advantage of his chip lead to force tough decisions and eventually claimed victory in a dramatic three-way all-in. Enrico Camosci had the best hand preflop but couldn’t fade the board as Jorstad rivered an ace to eliminate both Camosci and Ilya Nikiforov in one fell swoop. With this win, Jorstad not only claims his maiden EPT title but cements his place among poker’s elite.

Eureka Main Event and High Roller: The EPT Prague Action Continues

The Eureka Main Event, one of the most anticipated tournaments of the weekend, has been drawing big names and fierce competition. With its €1,100 buy-in, this event is the ideal place for mid-stakes players to shine. By now, the action is reaching its final stages, with Theodoros Ampelikiotis exiting in fifth place for €138,370 after his A♥ K♥ failed to hold against Ryan Plant’s 7♦ 7♣. Plant’s sevens stayed strong on a 3♦ 8♥ 5♠ 9♥ 9♠ runout, bringing the field one step closer to crowning a champion.

Meanwhile, the €2,200 Eureka High Roller kicked off with its Day 1A and 1B flights over the weekend. With players like Ryan Plant making deep runs in both events, the stage is set for a dramatic finish as the tournaments progress into the night.

Stay tuned — this is only the beginning.
