Is It Possible to Make the Same Money in PLO Cash as in NLHE Cash?

“No-Limit Texas Hold ’em Is The Cadillac Of Poker” – wrote Doyle Brunson in his book SuperSystem back in 1979. Forty-five years later, this phrase is still relevant: NLHE remains the most popular poker discipline. It has the most players, and therefore the most money.
But is it possible to make as much, or even more, at the cash tables of the second most popular game, Pot-Limit Omaha? That’s what we will try to find out with the help of StatName by analyzing the results of the top players at various limits for September 2024. The results surprised us.
But first, some important notes:
- StatName considers net profit at cash tables. Rakeback and rewards from leaderboards and promotions are not included in the statistics.
- StatName tracks results only at cash tables (fast-fold poker tables are not included).
- StatName statistics may differ from your HUD statistics because some hands may be lost during import. However, the sample of hands in StatName remains representative and provides an accurate picture of the player.
“One in the field”: Only 1-2 Omaha Players in the Micro Stakes Tops
To be precise, there are 2 PLO-players at $0.05/0.10 rating and one PLO-player at $0.10/0.25.
Why is that? We have a couple of theories. The first is variance. Omaha has much higher variance than Hold’em, and it’s particularly high at lower limits. The second is rake. On GGPoker, the rake is higher than on PokerStars, which has affected the number of Omaha players in the tops.

The best player at NL/PL10 for September: “morlockz” on PokerStars: +$816 over 38K hands.

The best player at NL/PL25 for September: “Slavzhik7”: $2.2K over 50K hands.
By the way, you can track any number of players up to PL25 for free on the StatName website.
NL/PL 50 and 100: The Best PLO Players Earn as Much as Top NLHE Players

A surprising discovery: 4 out of 15 players at $0.25/0.50 are Omaha players. Another interesting note: “fekasteve” on PL50 888poker earned as much as “Eatesta” at iPoker tables. Topping the chart was “toltottkaposzta” from GGPoker with a result of $2.5K over 27K hands.

A similar situation occurred at $0.50/1, where 4 out of 15 players are Omaha players. The biggest winner was “TheBraveGirl” in Hold’em: $5.7K over 31K hands. Second place went to “gorskey” in Omaha: $5.4K over 18K hands.
NL/PL 200, 500, and 1K: The Same Situation as at the Micro Stakes
The ratio of players remains the same: 1-2 Omaha players in the top 15.

IhaveWhitemagic indeed possesses some kind of magic; otherwise, how do you explain a win rate of 74.2 bb/100?

Another interesting observation: at these limits, the top players are mostly from GGPoker. For example, at NL1K, there wasn’t a single representative from other rooms.
NL/PL 2K: Where All the Omaha Players Gather
We found the only limit where the top Omaha players significantly outnumber the top Hold’em players. 12 out of 15 players at the $10-20 limit are regular Omaha players.

Overall, Hold’em Players Earned More Than Omaha Players
Leading the ranking of the best players in September was Matt Marinelli, with a profit of $479K over 10K hands. Following him was the legendary Michael Addamo, who managed to post nearly the same profit in just 1K hands. In third place was Linus Loeliger with $347K profit. All of them played Hold’em in September.
