Often times, poker pros will use additional tools during their game, such as hand converters and mining.
So, why are hand converters needed in poker. Are they (il)legal to use? Is mining also legal? — we have collected all the necessary information in one guide.
What Is a Hand Converter?
Simply put, a hand converters is a program that converts the hand history from rooms and poker apps into an understandable format for trackers (Hand2Note, Poker Tracker 4, Holdem Manager 3).
Thanks to hand converters, players can import hand history into a database, analyze played sessions, and display HUD in real time (in club apps).
Is It Legal to Use a Hand Converter in Different Rooms?
Yes, it’s legal to use hand converters in different poker rooms. Below you’ll find information about some poker rooms in which hand converters are available:

What Is Mining?
Mining, also known as hand history datamining, is a base of hands from a certain limit in a cash, MTT or Spins. Mining allows poker players to determine the trends of the field and player leaks.
Is Mining Legal?
As a general rule, all online poker rooms prohibit the use of mining, as it provides an unfair advantage over other players. A player using mining to their advantage receives a database of millions of played hands, which they could not collect on their own.
However, mining can be used outside of the game to analyze field trends and find leaks. Still, it is prohibited to use mining during the game.
Is It Possible to Get Banned for Using Mining?
In theory, it’s possible.
However, it’s also hard to prove a player gained information maliciously, meaning that in practice, mining isn’t usually punished. Thus, a ban for using mining is extremely rare. For example, a player on a stream may reveal that they have several million hands against their opponent. In this case, the poker room would understand that it’s impossible to collect such massive amounts of date by a single person, so sanctions would probably be applied.
So, Is It Legal to Use Mining at All?
Surprisingly, it is. Although, not in the way you might think.
Poker schools use mining to create educational materials. Mass Data Analysis (MDA) is a popular trend in poker training. With it, millions of hands are loaded into the tracker and analyzed using special functions. As a result, poker players gain valuable insights into how their opponents are playing and learn to develop poker strategies based on these findings.
Overall, at least for learning purposes, mining is helpful to build strategies as none of the players play the perfect GTO. Players deviate from the optimal lines. Mining analysis allows you to identify the most common deviations and build a strategy based on them.
The only problem here is that getting the most up-to-date player database is very difficult. For instance, data obtained from 2018 distributions is no longer relevant in 2024.
