Position in poker is the player’s position in the betting order, typically determined by the dealer button. The dealer button moves clockwise around the table after each hand, which means that players will experience different positions throughout a game. The later a player’s position, the more information they have about their opponents’ actions before they need to decide on their own.

The Three Types of Position

There are three general types of position in poker: early position, middle position, and late position. Early position refers to players who need to act first, without knowing what actions other players will take. Middle position offers some information, but not as much as late position. Late position, particularly the dealer position, is considered the strongest, as players in this position act last and have the most information about others’ actions.
