Sunday Scoop: Dan Smith is the Man in Sunday Million

Dan “Danny98765” Smith added to an already impressive year by winning the PokerStars Sunday Million yesterday.

Smith already had $3.6 million in tournament winnings including super high roller wins in Barcelona and Australia and three side-event victories at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo this year.

Smith also cashed five times at the 2012 WSOP and finished third in the $5k No-Limit Hold’em event to win a total of $430k at the Series.

It was another busy weekend for online poker as thousands flocked to the virtual tables yesterday.

Here’s a rundown of two of the most notable events that occurred yesterday:

Dan Smith
Dan Smith just wins. Period.

PokerStars Sunday Million

Dan Smith outlasted 7,060 players to win the Sunday Million for $219,504.

Thanks to the huge field the prize pool nearly hit $5 million this week. Among PokerStars players to make the money were Christophe De Muelder, Angel Guillen, Adrienne “talonchick” Rowsome, Henrique Pinho and Christian “el grillo” De Leon.

Smith entered the final table as the chip leader with 18 million and played like a wrecking ball at the final table.

The U.S.-born pro busted three players in the early stages of the final table and looked unstoppable.

When the table got down to five players, Smith cooled off a bit and actually entered heads-up play against yurabond at a slight chip disadvantage.

It didn’t matter as Smith quickly doubled with ace-jack over yurabond’s king-jack. After that pivotal hand it didn’t take long for yurabond to get his last three million chips in the middle with a modest four-three. Smith snapped him off with pocket fives and that was more than enough to win the hand and the tournament.

Interestingly Smith actually managed to get $8,000 more than he should have for first place thanks to a five-way deal.

Here are the complete final-table payouts (*reflects a five-way deal):

  • 1. Dan “Danny98765” Smith (Canada) $219,504.25*
  • 2. yurabond (Russia) $85,000.00*
  • 3. Karger222 (Denmark) $102,993.24*

PokerStars Sunday 500

Mexican PokerStars Pros Angel Guillen and Christian “el grillo” De Leon both made deep runs in the Sunday 500 but it was online player sanpri, whose account is also registered in Mexico, who would take the contest down for $75k.

The elite $500 buy-in online tournament drew 838 players to create an overall prize pool of $419k.

As usual the tournament was stacked with online pros as Griffin “Flush_Entity” Benger, Jonathan “MONSTER_DONG” Karamalikis, Nacho Barbero, Mike “Timex” McDonald and Mike “SirWatts” Watson all made the money.

Guillen made it all the way to 21st place before finally tapping out while De Leon made it to 17th before hitting the rail.

Canadian Sebastian “p0cket00” Sikorski made a very deep run that eventually saw him finish in 14th place, just shy of the final table.

The final table was not devoid of stars either as former Sunday Million winner Brian “brianm15” England finished fifth and Uruguayan superstar zugzwang16 finished fourth.

Online player sanpri would eventually go on to best the U.K.’s trickyone14 to win the contest outright for $74k.
