The $50k High Roller was another event with a pricey buy-in during the early stages of the 2022 WSOP. Seemingly, those events are in high demand as the player numbers suggest. With 85 entries this tournament played out more than $4 million.
After three days of action, it was Jake Schindler who took down the event and won $1,328,068. He had to play against a strong field at the final table with Shannon Shorr, Andrew Lichtenberger and Dario Sammartino among his opponents. During the final day, Schindler was at risk of elimination three times, the first time with K-T against Punnat Punsri with 3-3 and the second time with T-T against Shannon Shorr with 8-8. Schindler won both preflop all-ins and the second hand propelled him into the chip lead which he kept until the heads-up. Against Brek Schutten Schindler started with a chip disadvantage, but he managed to double up once more by picking up a massive bluff which was the pivotal hand of the heads-up:
Jake Schindler limped with K 4 from the button and roughly 30 big blinds behind. Schindler and Schutten both checked the K 6 2 flop. After a 3 on the turn Schindler bet 2 big blinds and Schutten check-raised to 6 big blinds. Schindler called. The river fell 6 and now – with 14 big blinds in the middle – Schutten moved all-in for effectively 22 big blinds. Schindler called after some contemplation and his top pair was good against Schuttens stonecold bluff with Q 5 .
With this hand, Schindler regained the lead and a few hands later both players were all-in again, this time preflop. Schindler had A-K, Schutten was dominated with A-Q and the board brought Schutten no help – game, set and match Schindler.
Up until this tournament Jake Schindler, who won more than $35 million in poker tournaments over his illustrious career and is currently ranked #12 in the Hendon Mob All Time Money List, was regarded as one of the most successful players to never win a bracelet. Not anymore! After defeating Brek Schutten in the heads-up Schindler can now put a golden bracelet in his trophy room and he is more than $1,3 million richer.
